An intro to Rio de Janeiro: Rio is the must-visit city in Brazil. In a city hosting the next World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics after London in 2016, there is so much for the tourist to see and do. Surrounding the Tijuca Rainforest national park and dotted with famous mountains including Sugar Loaf, the Corcovado, on which sits the famous Christ statue, and the two brothers, overlooking the paradise beach of Ipanema, Rio lives up to its status as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However, as eye-catchingly beautiful as Rio may be, it is also one of the most crime ridden and dangerous cities in the world. Be extremely careful carrying any valuables with you at any time of the day if you visit Rio – especially in areas such as Catete or Lapa – and never walk the streets at night.
