Nicaragua

During my trip to Nicaragua I visted the capital city of Granada and the famous island within a lake – Ometepe. Lake Nicaragua, or Cocibulca as it is also known, is one of the largest in Latin America – almost as big as Lake Titicaca in Peru. Right in the centre, sticks out a huge island called Ometepe, formed by a now extinct volcano. The water around Ometepe is black and pretty dirty from the volcanic mud, but one can still swim in there. Granada is a beautiful colonial town, with a long wide boulevard lined with bars and restaurants leading to a big square with church, market and a large flag (standard for Central America!)

Beware – one of the ladies in our group had her passport stolen from her bag – in her hotel room. She was Irish and there is no Irish embassy in Nicaragua. She had to wait two weeks to leave the country and wasn’t able to cross the Costa Rica border despite having police reports, letters from the embassy and photocopies. The police were particularly uncaring to the situation so do be very careful in Nicaragua with your passport!
