Last stop – home

I’m sat in Rio de Janeiro Galeao International airport about to board my final round the world flight – home. I can’t believe its five months since I left the UK. That’s 158 days i’ve been on the road. I also can’t believe I’m leaving 28 degree Brazil for 2 degree England. Well at least I’m not off to Estonia. It’s been -31 most nights for the past few weeks – so cold the Gulf of Finland has frozen!

It’s hard to sum up what a trip it’s been – I’ll need a few days (or weeks) to fully get my thoughts together, but one thing is for sure – it’s been the trip of a lifetime!

My round the

Missing Bahia already

After Aracaju, we travelled again by bus (40Rs per person) to Maceio. The bus station (Rodoviara) is 4km outside the centre so you will have to get through the hordes of local bus card sellers and use a local bus to the main Rodovaria (bus numbers 33 and 34). Pay the lady at the barrier to board rather than the touts by the turnstiles. The bus company we used was Real Alagoas with 3 buses a day – we took the 12.30pm but the is 6am and 6pm (comfy, A/C and quick – but loads of mosquitos and even a cockroach on the bus ). The other company is Bomfim but they had a massive queue at the window

Araca-don’t

After our tropical paradise, we travelled further up the Linha Verde to the final stop – Sitio do Conde. The town had a nice large square with tourist office and good beaches, however we decided we would carry on further up the coast as we found a small comfortable bus in the square to Aracaju, the next big town. This was perhaps a mistake as Aracaju is a real dump, so beware.

Aracaju is a city of 500,000, most of which are dirt poor and clearly criminals. We arrived after dark to find almost every shop boarded up with iron grills around them and few people around. We headed to what was billed as the ‘main street’ in the

Brazilian Tropical Paradise

We’re slowly making our way up the beautiful Brazilian East coast via beach paradise after beach paradise. Salvador was great fun, with similarly beautiful beaches, good restaurants and some pretty good hostels. We stayed 6 nights in the end – more than i’ve stayed almost anywhere in the 5 months travelling, except Santiago and Buenos Aires.

The highlight of the journey so far has been a tiny village, around 200km from Salvador along the Linha Verde, which will remain nameless to keep it as perfect as it was. There are around four Pousada’s on the beach, which consists of pure white sand lapped by beautiful clean atlantic blue water. A 20 minute walk north and you are totally alone with

Salvador sunbathing

We’ve travelled up the east coast of Brazil from Rio to Salvador. To save time we cheated and flew with Tam via Sao Paulo. A piece of advice; you need to book Tam flights through a third party, as you need a brazilian national insurance number, which of course neither Marju or I have. If you phone the UK call centre they add an extra £100 to the ticket price so be warned! Expedia offers the same cheap flights at brazilian price but without the charge.

Salvador is lovely and sunny compared to the rain of Rio. We’ve spent much of the time changing hostels, finding a launderette and sunbathing, so not much to report really! The beaches are
